“The lack of power to take joy in outdoor nature is as real a misfortune as the lack of power to take joy in a book.” — Theodore Roosevelt.
As I look out my window and look up at Snowbowl ski area, I am reminded of how lucky I am to live where I do — in Missoula, MT, in the heart of the gorgeous Rocky Mountains of western Montana. After a winter of great mountain snow, ski conditions were fantastic — just a few minutes away. Here in the Missoula valley we experienced a relatively mild winter, spring is fast approaching and all of our warmer weather outdoor adventures will really begin in earnest.
From Glacier National Park to the entrance to Yellowstone National Park in West Yellowstone, Missoula is the perfect place to begin your once-in-a-lifetime outdoor adventure. Located roughly between these two national parks, you’ll have convenient access to two of the most amazing national treasures.
Just imagine zip lining near Glacier and seeing the spectacular mountains and glaciers that soar above the pristine lakes. Spring plowing of Glacier’s famed Going to the Sun Road will begin in April, with opening of the entire road estimated by early June.
While plowing begins in Glacier, our neighbors to the south in Yellowstone, will be opening some of its roads to several types of non-motorized travel. Biking, walking, and roller-blading in the park is allowed from mid-March to the middle of April, depending on weather conditions. From its vast geographical diversity that includes geysers, mud pots, mountain lakes and soaring mountains, to its wide variety of wildlife, Yellowstone is a once in a lifetime experience to see exquisite national wonders of the world.
When visiting Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks, you can experience fantastic national wildlife — black bears, grizzly bears, bison, elk and wolves — as they live and thrive in some of the most rugged and spectacular landscape around.
