Snowbowl Ski Area – Snowbowl is the local ski hill located a short 20-minute drive from downtown Missoula. It’s a locally run, mom and pop resort, but don’t let the laid back quaintness fool you. This little mountain is chock-full of expert terrain. You can enjoy more than 900 acres and a continuous vertical drop of 2,600 feet. Top off your Bowl experience at the Last Run Inn with its famous pizza and a Bloody Mary.
If you’re looking for a more family-friendly resort, head down to Discovery Ski Area. It’s less than 100 miles southeast of Missoula and is sure to please any level of skier.
Lolo Hot Springs – Pack your swimwear! A dip in the area hot springs is an absolute must when temperatures dip, providing a soothing delight all winter long. Lolo Hot Springs is 35 miles southwest of Missoula. It is perfectly tucked in the mountains along the Montana-Idaho border. Year-round lodging is available, including cabins, RV parking and campgrounds.
If you’re willing to drive a bit further, you can take a dip at numerous different area hot springs, including: Jerry Johnson, Quinn’s, Lost Trail, Weir Creek.
Cross country trails – Do you want to get out in the snow and play, but avoid black diamond runs and paying for ski tickets? Take advantage of countless opportunities near Missoula to strap on cross-countries skis and hit the trails. A couple local favorites include Pattee Canyon Recreation Area and Rattlesnake National Recreation Area. Both areas offer easy access, free parking, and miles of groomed trails. For a quick getaway and a variety of ski levels, head to Lubrecht Experimental Forest. Lubrecht has more than 12 miles of dog-friendly groomed trails and is located just 30 miles east of Missoula on Hwy 200.
Breweries and Distilleries – Missoula’s booming brewery and distillery business is the place to be. There are a total of eight craft breweries in town and not one will disappoint. Missoulians are proud of their beer, so take time to do as the locals do and belly up to: Bayern Brewing, Big Sky Brewing Co., Draught Works, Flathead Lake Brewing Co., Great Burn Brewing, Kettlehouse Brewing Co., Missoula Brewing Co., and Tamarack Brewing.
Are you more of a spirits lover? Then head to any of the three distilleries in Missoula for signature cocktails or samples of Missoula made vodka, gin or whiskey. Enjoy some sips or swills from Montgomery Distillery, The Montana Distillery, and Rattlesnake Creek Distillers, but please do it responsibly.
Glacier Ice Rink – Lace up some skates and hit the ice for some good ol’ fashion fun during its public skating hours. If you’d prefer to stay off the ice, catch a hockey game some evening. Glacier Ice Arena is located near the Missoula Fairgrounds and is home to the Missoula Maulers. The Maulers are part of the Northern Pacific Ice Hockey League.
Farmer’s Markets Heirloom Winter Market – In Missoula, the popular farmer’s market season does not come to a close during the winter months. The Heirloom Winter Market is housed at the Missoula Fairgrounds and open Saturdays from 11am – 2pm during the months of November to April. Closer to downtown on 3rd St., is the Missoula Winter Public Market, which is open Saturdays from 10am – 2 pm from November through April. Both markets offer an array of venders from fresh, local produce to meats and cheeses to crafts and décor to coffee and baked goods.
